Overview
Dental and oral health is an essential part of your overall health and well-being. Poor oral hygiene can lead to dental cavities and gum disease and has also been linked to heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Dental diseases are major contributors to health burdens for many countries and affect people throughout their lifetime, causing pain, discomfort, disfigurement and even death. These diseases are known to have common risk factors with other major non-communicable diseases and it is estimated that oral diseases affect nearly 3.5 billion people globally. Untreated dental caries in permanent teeth is the most common health condition according to the Global Burden of Disease. More than 500 million cases have been associated with children suffering from dental caries of primary teeth.
Healthcare professionals perform variable roles cutting across primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention including providing oral hygiene education, recognizing common pathologies, and treating oral lesions, administration of tooth extractions, dental pain management, and referral for advanced care.
